How to French Tip Your Own Nails

I've always been a big fan of having some sort of color or polish on my nails. I used to only paint my nails and then when I graduated college, I started getting them done. I mostly got gel, but I did try the dip powder a couple times as well. I loved getting my nails done because it made them grow long, I was guaranteed to have no chips for at least two weeks and I didn't have to wait for them to dry!! However, I didn't like the price, having to go every two weeks to get them redone, and what the gel was doing to my natural nail. I decided to take a break from my every 2 weeks habit and went back to painting my own nails. This sucked for a while, because my nails were really damaged from having gel on them for 3 straight years. However, I stuck with it and slowly the new nail started to grow in, pushing the old, damaged nail out.

Anyways - long story short --- I missed having that perfectly french tipped nail that I would get at the salon. I had never really tried to french tip my own nails except when I was younger and used tape lol. I tried out this random idea I had on how to do it myself and it actually worked!

Here's how I did it:

Supplies needed: Nail polish remover, white nail polish (I use Sally Hansen Insta-Dry), clear coat nail polish, paper towel and a small brush (I use a small Bare Minerals concealer brush).

  1. Pour a little nail polish remover into the cap

  2. Place your hand on the paper towel and paint the tip of your nail with the white polish. I go down to about 1/3 of my nail with the white polish.

  3. Kind of quickly (you don't want the white polish to start drying too much) dip the brush in the remover, place on the upper middle part of your nail and start to brush away the excess polish. Giving your nail a natural curve.

  4. Wipe the brush onto the paper towel getting rid of the white polish and repeat until you have your nail exactly how you want it.

  5. Let you nails dry and then apply one coat of clear nail polish.

  6. You're done!

Basically, you can just do what they do at the salon, but with nail polish and nail polish remover.

This usually lasts about 3-5 days. After that, I usually get a fews chips. The nice thing about french tip is that you don’t have to completely redo your entire nail when it chips. I take a tiny bit of white nail polish and make touch ups as they chip.
