I've been really into plants lately. My husband and I recently moved into a new house that has fantastic natural light and lots of windows. I've read a lot about how plants can help purify the air. Plus they give your home or apartment a warm and bright feeling.
I've also been cooking a bit more now that we're finally starting to get settled into our new home. I love fresh herbs and spices. And I don't like always having to go get them at the grocery store. Our house has a large wall that faces a bunch of windows and I thought what a perfect place for an herb garden. Less grocery runs and more fresh spices! I looked up several ideas on Pinterest and decided I wanted to recreate something like this:
I found these buckets on Ikea, but they were a little pricey. I wanted this project to be budget friendly so I did some research. I was able to find almost identical buckets, but they were multi-colored. I ordered 10 for $10 on Amazon and spray painted them matte white. I then ordered two brushed nickel pot holder racks on Amazon. I found a silver bucket at Ross and got my herbs from Publix, Kroger and Walmart.
My husband and I screwed the pot holder racks into the wall. We gave enough space in between each one for the plants to grow. The buckets came with a hanger attached. I placed each plant in it’s own bucket and then filled the extra space with dirt. I put the “Herb” bucket in the center on the bottom rack. I tried to space out the different size plants accordingly. Then watched them grow!
Herbs: Parsley, Thyme, Rosemary, Mint, Cilantro, Dill and Basil. These plants can be found at Kroger, Publix, Walmart, etc. in the fresh foods section. They come pre-grown and will continue to grow. Each one cost $1.99
Wall Mount: I ordered two from Amazon for $18.99 each.
Pots: Ten Pieces Metal Iron Hanging Flower Pot for $11.99
White Matte Spray Paint: $4 at Home Depot
Herbs Bucket: Found at Ross for $5
Tips
Most herbs require a lot of sunlight and plenty of water — but not too much water. Sometimes I put the herbs outside so they can get extra sun.
Different herbs grow better than others. I noticed that dill and cilantro were the hardest to keep alive.
Parsley, mint and basil grow like weeds!
Be sure to clip the herbs even if you aren’t using them. This helps them stay alive and keeps them growing.
The herb I use the most is basil! You can use it in almost everything. My favorite is to put it on avocado toast!
