5 Tips for Budget Airline Travel

Many of us assume that a budget airline means delays, less leg room, added fees and no snacks. I’m here to clear the air and give budget airlines the credit that they deserve. However, do keep in mind, that each budget airline is going to be different. Like full-service airlines, most budget airlines have different types of planes. You may fly Spirit and have a great experience on one of their newer planes, but then on your way home, end up on an older plane and be counting down the minutes until it lands. Below I have compiled a few of my most useful tips for getting the best experience on a budget airline flight:

  1. Bring Snacks - most budget airlines do not include complimentary food, snacks or drinks. Solution: pack your own snacks. This saves you money, and allows you to choose what kind of food you bring. *Conserve space by avoiding bags of chips that are filled with air and instead put chips, pretzels or nuts in a ziplock bag.

  2. Pre-download movies and shows - personal TV's, WIFI, and on-flight entertainment are not usually included on a budget airline. However, Netflix allows you to download a number of shows and movies that you can watch offline later on. You can also rent or buy movies on iTunes. This helps pass the time and makes your flight more enjoyable.

  3. Water bottle - as you know, no more than 3.4 ounces of liquid can go through security. Solution: empty out a water bottle before you enter security then fill it back up at a water fountain inside the terminal. Keep your water bottle with you throughout your trip to stay hydrated and to avoid spending money on overpriced water at stores and restaurants (specifically if you are traveling out of the country).

  4. Travel size containers - budget airlines can get you with their hidden fees - one of those being an additional cost for carry on and checked bags. Opt to put your essential liquid items (face lotion, contact solution, hair gel, makeup remover) in small containers that way you can keep them in your personal item bag. You can find small containers for $1 at Walmart. *Remember you can always buy things such as hairspray and shampoo at the grocery store or market when you arrive at your final destination.

  5. Vacuum seal bags - these save me so much room. Pre-plan your outfits and put them in a vacuum seal bag before packing them in your backpack. *Keep in mind it's much easier to save space when packing for a warm destination.
