Amsterdam → Austria

This is the trip that started it all. This trip left me with a passion to find deals and workarounds that would allow people to see more for less.

We had been in Amsterdam for four days, and were left with an extra day to explore before flying back to the United States. We wanted to see another country, but we had to find a way to do this in under $150 and make it back to Amsterdam before our flight home. The challenge I was met with was this:

Explore a new country, stay under the $150 budget, get back to Amsterdam before our flight home. Total time = 48 hours.

Here’s how we did it:

  1. With a quick search, I looked up roundtrip flights from Amsterdam to Salzburg. Total price $700. Not going to work.

  2. I knew my parents were planning on taking a day trip to Dusseldorf Germany (only a 2 ½ hour car drive)

  3. Flights from Dusseldorf to Munich were $60 one way on AirBerlin. Done. They dropped us off at the airport around 6 p.m. after we had spent the morning roaming around Dusseldorf.

  4. But I wanted to get to Salzburg….

  5. Train tickets from Munich to Salzburg cost a whopping 19 euros - very affordable

  6. Now the question was, “How do we get back to Amsterdam before our International flight?”

  7. A quick search on Transavia Airlines (which I had never heard of) showed one-way flights back to Amsterdam for $32. Sold.

Total transportation cost - $112
