What To Do in the Canary Islands

The Canary Islands are a Spanish archipelago, off the coast of northwestern Africa. The three main islands are Tenerife, Fuerteventura, and Gran Canaria. The island we explored was Tenerife. It was absolutely breathtaking and I am dying to go back. You can easily fly there from Spain for almost nothing $$. We flew from Barcelona to Tenerife South on Ryanair for $30 one-way. The weather was sunny and 75 every single day, the food was delicious and the scenery was jaw-dropping. Here is my top 5 list of things to do in the Canary Islands:

Top 5 things to do:

  1. Kayaking in Los Gigantes next to 1600 ft cliffs (It’s called Los Gigantes for a reason) We used a kayak company called Teno Activo. It was $25 a person and included the equipment, tour guide, and a beverage.

  2. Relax and enjoy the black and white sand beaches. Some of the beaches were rather crowded, but there were a lot to choose from. We walked along the rocks next to the city and found several beaches with very few people.

  3. Drink Sangria and try the Canarian Potatoes with Mojo sauce - a secret sauce & a must try.

  4. Mt. Tiede. Volcano. Tenerife is dominated by this dormant volcano and while we were there we decided to take a look. We drove up to the base and then took a $19 gondola to the top. We did some casual hiking and observed snow that was on the ground. When we got back down to our hotel it was 75 degrees and sunny.

  5. Siam Park - while we did not get the chance to visit this waterpark, we would love to go back and see it. Siam Park is highly recommended and ranked the number one waterpark in the world. One of their main attractions being a 250 ft body slide that passes you through an aquarium filled with sharks and stingrays.
