Traveling can be expensive and usually requires taking time off. I get asked a lot how I can afford to travel so much. Below is a list of tips on how to travel more and spend less:
Vacation Days: Use them wisely. For an extended weekend trip, pick a holiday weekend where you get Friday or Monday off. For longer, international travel, make sure to incorporate weekends into the trip as much as you can.
Holidays: Most companies offer one or two paid holidays that aren’t Christmas or Thanksgiving. Since travel during Christmas and Thanksgiving is astronomically expensive, holidays such as Memorial Day, Good Friday and President’s Day are great alternatives. If you’re a student, take advantage of those long summer and winter breaks! You don’t get those after graduation…
Weekend Getaways: Perfect for domestic travel, 3-day cruises and road trips.
Budget Airlines: Fly a budget airline instead of a full-service carrier. You may not get to pick your seats or receive a complimentary drink, but these airlines will get you to your desired destination just like all the others.
Travel Light: Over packing is easy. Don't do it. Luggage is a pain, and the less you have the less the hassle. You save time, money and space. *This money-saver tip particularly applies to people using budget airlines, due to the extra cost for carry-ons and checked bags.
Loose Change: Look for small things that you spend money on each week. (i.e. eating out, Starbucks, ordering a drink instead of water) Cut back on those purchases. They may seem small, but in the end it all adds up. *Bring your lunch four times a week for a month and see how much money you can save.
Unused Items: In need of some extra travel money? Try selling clothes you don't wear anymore. Consignment stores, Facebook Market and eBay are all great ways to do this. That iPhone 5 that you still have in a drawer? Get rid of it.
